AZ Women suffer defeat against ADO Den Haag
Published on 05 november 23, 16:05ZAANSTAD- AZ Women suffered a home defeat against ADO Den Haag on Sunday. After a closely contested opening phase, the visitors took the lead. In the second half, ADO extended their lead even further. The Alkmaar-based team managed to pull one back in the closing stages. The match ended with a score of 2-4.
Two weeks ago, due to international football, AZ Women last played. The Alkmaar team had only one change compared to the last match against PEC Zwolle, with Mirte van Bentum starting, while Manique de Vette was on the bench.
Quiet Opening Phase
The game had a quiet opening phase in which both teams showed attacking intentions but failed to create any danger. The first real chance of the match came after 23 minutes. Floor Spaan attempted to beat the goalkeeper with a surprising long-range shot, but her effort went wide of the goal.
Quick Successive Goals Against
After half an hour of play, the first goal of the game arrived. Initially, AZ goalkeeper Femke Liefting made a brilliant save from Lobke Loonen's close-range effort. However, the subsequent corner was headed in by the Den Haag forward: 0-1. The visitors doubled their lead when Manon van Raay tapped in a cross.
AZ Close to Scoring
Despite conceding goals, the home team remained resilient and created a series of chances before halftime. Camie Mol had a fantastic long-range shot, but her effort hit the crossbar. Another long-range attempt by Isa Colin was denied by goalkeeper Barbara Lorsheyd. Both teams went to the locker rooms with a 0-2 score.
Unfortunate Own Goal
At the beginning of the second half, the away team extended their lead to 0-3. A free-kick was carried by the wind, and the ball ended up in the AZ captain Desiree van Lunteren's net, resulting in an unfortunate own goal.
AZ's Chances, ADO's Goal
Despite the setback, AZ Women played well in the second half. Substitute Isa Dekker's free-kick narrowly missed the goal, and Colin's long-range attempt hit the wrong side of the post. Later, the away team received assistance from Mother Nature again. Thanks to a strong gust of wind, a direct free-kick found its way into the Alkmaar net: 0-4.
AZ's Late Offensive
AZ Women showed resilience and finally managed to score some goals. Assisted by Spaan, Van Lunteren headed the ball past ADO goalkeeper Lorsheyd: 1-4. A few minutes later, the same players were involved in another goal. A powerful long-range shot from Van Lunteren couldn't be cleared properly by the goalkeeper, and Spaan reacted quickly to slot the ball home from close range. In the last minute, Bo op de Weegh came close to making it 3-4, but the ADO goalkeeper made the save, and the score remained at 2-4.
