ALKMAAR- Pontus Wernbloom (25) has joined CSKA Moscow from AZ after signing a contract for an undisclosed fee that will keep him in the Russian capital until 2016. The Swedish midfielder’s contract with AZ was due to expire in the summer of 2013.

Wernbloom signed a contract with AZ in April 2009 and after a period of six months during which AZ won the Johan Cruijff Shield and played Champions League football, the physically strong Swede rapidly established himself as a first-team regular under then manager Dick Advocaat.

The Sweden international was also the first choice on Gertjan Verbeek´s team sheet. Together with compatriot Rasmus Elm, Wernbloom, strong in the air and in the tackle, impressed  with his set-pieces. Wernbloom, capped 24 times by Sweden, made 57 league appearances for AZ, scoring seven goals in the process.
