Jahanbakhsh leads AZ to victory

ALKMAAR- AZ booked a hard-fought victory over FC Groningen last Sunday. A spectacular second half appeared to end in a 2-2 draw, only for Alireza Jahanbakhsh to score the winner with his head. With the 3-2 win, AZ strengthens its third position in the Eredivisie.

Both teams were tantamount in the first, goalless 45 minutes but the game really came to ignition after the tea. Jonas Svensson opened the score in the 53rd minute with a very cheeky backheel touch. Thirteen minutes later, the 2-0 was added to the scoring board: Guus Til managed to muffle the ball in after a scrimmage in the five meter box. It seemed to be game over.

However, FC Groningen came back into the game after a goal by Tom van Weert, and a beautiful long distance shot by Ritsu Doan meant FC Groningen came alongside. AZ fought hard to keep the three points in Alkmaar and eventually drew the longest straw. In the dying seconds, Alireza Jahanbakhsh headed in the decisive goal after a corner. AZ seems to be rather untouchable on the third place, with an eleven point lead on Feyenoord with six remaining games. Ajax also won, and stay five points ahead of AZ.
