Jahanbakhsh steals the show against VitessePublished on 19 april 18, 10:59
A lovely summery evening in the AFAS Stadium was the décor of a spectacular football show with Alireza in the lead role. AZ got off to a favourable start, and provided itself with a comfortable two-goal margin within the first fifteen minutes. After seven minutes, Wout Weghorst produced a falling diagonal header after a sharp cross from his partner in crime in the attacking line, Alireza Jahanbakhsh.
Just five minutes later, the Iranian winger was the final station of another AZ attack: a low shot from close by seemed to seal the game. However, inadvertence after a cross from former AZ player Roy Beerens resulted in the 2-1 by Bryan Linssen. Vitesse grew into the game and their efforts were rewarded in the 40th minute when Tim Matavz scored the equalizer.
However, AZ started the second half with a lead because – once again – Jahanbakhsh was launched by Weghorst and scored with a phenomenal lob: 3-2. He concluded his great game eight minutes into the second half with a knuckle ball that was too mighty for Vitesse goalie Houwen. With the cup final in prospect, Jahanbakhsh got spared for the rest of the game by AZ coach John van den Brom. The substitution led to ecstasy in de stands.
All eyes on Sunday
Mason Mount scored the 4-3, but that was not enough. With the win, AZ is now officially assured of the third position. The next game is the cup final of 22nd of April.
