ALKMAAR- Finland U-19 international Thomas Lam has signed a four-year contract with AZ that will keep him at the AFAS Stadion until the summer of 2016. The 18-year- old centre back joined AZ´s academy set-up six years ago. Lam has been voted the ´Best Young Player of the year” by all the coaches of the Finnish national teams.

Lam, who can also play a midfield position, was promoted to AZ´s first team-squad at the start of the current season. The right-footed player has become a Young AZ regular, but has not made a first-team appearance yet. Yet Gertjan Verbeek revealed recently: “I won’t hesitate to give promising youngsters like Thomas Lam a chance to shine.”

Born in Amsterdam, Lam joined amateur club AFC. As he has a Finnish mother, he has made appearances for Finnish national youth teams since he was fifteen. This season, he was promoted to the Finland U-19 team.

“I am happy to stay with AZ”, said Lam after putting pen to paper on his contract. “Some English and Italian clubs have shown an interest in me, but I feel I am not ready yet for a move abroad. AZ offer their young players a chance to develop to their potential. This new contract is a token of appreciation. I learn a lot from my compatriot Niklas Moisander."
