Verbeek signs two-year contract extension

ALKMAAR- AZ manager Gertjan Verbeek, 49, has agreed a two-year contract extension which will run until the summer of 2015. Verbeek´s former contract was due to expire in June 2013.

Verbeek is in his second year as head coach at AZ. During his first season in charge in Alkmaar, AZ finished in fourth place, which ensured qualification for the Europa League. AZ are currently third in the table and are still in contention for the KNVB Beker and the Europa League as well.

First-team debuts

Since he took charge in Alkmaar, Verbeek has handed a large number of youth players their first-team debuts: Giliano Wijnaldum, Adam Maher, Ali Messaoud, Johann Berg Gudmundsson, Kolbeinn Sigthórsson, Fernando Lewis and Kevin Luckassen.

Coaching career

Verbeek started his coaching career as youth coach at sc Heerenveen when he was still a professional football player. After his active playing career he became Foppe de Haan´s assistant in Heerenveen. In 2001, he returned to his former club Heracles as head coach. After three seasons, he went to sc Heerenveen in 2004 as man in charge and booked a place in the Europa League for four successive seasons. After a brief spell with Feyenoord, Verbeek once again returned to Heracles Almelo, with whom he won a Europa League play- off berth.
