ALKMAAR- AZ - NEC has been definitively suspended on Sunday. After 90 minutes, AZ was trailing 1-2 when Bas Dost went to the ground and remained on the grass. Both AZ and NEC players shielded the striker, who required medical assistance. Fortunately, Dost was conscious and was carried off the field on a stretcher. Subsequently, the match was definitively suspended.
At AZ, Mayckel Lahdo returned to the starting lineup in Pascal Jansen's 150th match as AZ's head coach.
The first opportunity was immediately converted into a goal. After eleven minutes, Dost took a shot from outside the box and found the net for 0-1. AZ came very close to a quick response a minute later, but Vangelis Pavlidis hit the crossbar. After half an hour of play, NEC made it 0-2 with their second chance. Magnus Mattsson tapped in, assisted by Dost.
AZ had to chase the game and did so. Alexandre Penetra's attempt, however, was an easy catch for Jasper Cillessen, and a header from Dani de Wit ended up in the goalkeeper's hands as well. AZ went into halftime with a 0-2 deficit.
AZ started the second half well. Substitute Kenzo Goudmijn's shot from a difficult angle was saved by Cillessen, and De Wit's attempt from a corner also went into the hands of the goalkeeper. In the 57th minute, the much-awaited consolation goal finally arrived. De Wit extended a corner towards the far post. There, substitute Bruno Martins Indi headed the ball towards Pavlidis, and the striker worked it into the net with his knee: 1-2.
On a pass from substitute Jens Odgaard, Pavlidis had a shot from a difficult angle saved by Cillessen. From the resulting corner, De Wit's header narrowly missed the target. A long-range effort from Riechedly Bazoer went over the bar. In the 78th minute, Cillessen once again denied Pavlidis with a save. AZ was pressing aggressively. With five minutes to go, Odgaard headed just wide from a cross by Clasie. AZ came close again shortly after, but Pavlidis headed over.
In the closing stages, there was a truly frightening moment that brought an eerie silence to the AFAS Stadium. Dost remained on the field and needed medical attention. The AZ and NEC players formed a circle around the striker to shield him. Fortunately, Dost was conscious as he was stretchered off the field, and the match was definitively abandoned. AZ wishes Dost and all involved a swift and full recovery.
