ALKMAAR- In the final home match of the UEFA Europa Conference League group stage, AZ secured a victory. Thanks to a converted penalty by Vangelis Pavlidis, the Alkmaar team won 1-0 against HŠK Zrinjski Mostar.

Pascal Jansen made one change compared to the last match against FC Volendam. Djordje Mihailovic replaced the injured Sven Mijnans in midfield.

AZ was actively seeking a goal in the opening phase. Vangelis Pavlidis tested goalkeeper Marko Marić with a header, but the goalkeeper had no trouble dealing with his attempt. After 22 minutes, there was a lengthy VAR moment in the AFAS Stadium. Pavlidis delivered the ball to Ernest Poku in front of the goal, and he pulled the trigger, but Matija Malekinušić blocked the shot with his hand. Despite extensive deliberation and video review, the referee did not award a penalty.

The Alkmaar team faced little threat from the Bosnians and created several opportunities. Poku found Tiago Dantas after making a run, and the Portuguese player took a shot, but another defender blocked it. Poku later shot wide himself in a promising position. Just before half-time, AZ suffered a setback as Riechedly Bazoer left the field injured. Pavlidis shot just wide in injury time, and the first half ended with a 0-0 score.

The second half began with a free-kick for AZ from a promising position. Yukinari Sugawara took the shot but sent it over the bar. Djordje Mihailovic then had two significant chances, but the American first shot over and then tapped wide. A few minutes later, Pavlidis earned a penalty. The striker was touched in the penalty area and went down. Pavlidis took the ball himself and confidently shot it into the top corner for the lead!

Pressing on
Zrinjski hardly had a chance, and it was AZ that had the opportunities. Pavlidis shot from close range at goalkeeper Marić, and shortly after, in a kind of scramble, the goalkeeper was again the culprit. Attempts from Mihailovic and Pavlidis did not find the net. A spectacular overhead kick from Alexandre Penetra went over.

Now, AZ must hope for a victory for Aston Villa against Legia Warsaw. In that case, the Alkmaar team can advance to the next round with a win in the last match against Legia.
